I can spell a verb in the past tense using the suffix -ed.

If the word ends in a consonant, generally just add the suffix -ed. If the word ends in 'y', remove the 'y' and add -ied. If the word ends in 'e', remove the 'e' and add -ed. If there is a short vowel sound, double the consonant and add -ed. How to spell a range of curriculum words, including equip, equipped and attached.
