The final consonant of a word is often silent in French. We call this SFC for Silent Final Consonant: dans. The vowel 'e' is often silent at the end of a word. We call this SFe, Silent Final ‘e’: timide. Adjectives change spelling based on the gender of the noun they describe. Most adjectives add an 'e' in the feminine form: perdu, perdue. Some adjectives change spelling: sérieux, sérieuse. Some adjectives end in an 'e' in both the masculine and feminine forms: calme.
