The horizontal distance or coordinate is given first when describing positions on a coordinate grid. If the horizontal distance is a negative number then the point will be to the left of the y-axis. If the vertical distance is a negative number then the point will be below the x-axis. The horizontal distance is the x-coordinate. The vertical distance is the y-coordinate.
