Lesson outcome

I can describe the random nature of radioactive decay and the predictability of radioactive half-life.

Show transcript
Radioactive decay is a random process. It is impossible to predict the moment that a particular unstable nucleus will decay. It is possible to predict how long it will take for half of a sample of a radioactive isotope to decay. Radioactive half-life is the time taken for half of a radioactive isotope to decay (or for its activity to halve). Each radioactive isotope has its own half-life that is always the same.
