Knowledge of sound-symbol correspondences helps when pronouncing unfamiliar words. All Spanish nouns are masculine or feminine and the words for 'a/an' and 'the' are 'un, una' and 'el, la'. Adjectives agree for gender and many follow the noun. Verb endings indicate the person doing the action of the verb and pronouns are often not used.
