I can greet my friend and my teacher and I can use 'je suis' and 'elle, il est' to say 'I am' or 'she, he is'.

Many word-final consonants in French are not pronounced. ‘Salut’ ('hi') is a more informal greeting than ‘bonjour’ ('hello'). The irregular verb ‘être’ means to be, being. ‘Je suis’ means ‘I am’; ‘elle, il est’ means ‘she, he is’; the -s and -t are silent final consonants.
