I can use the correct German word order of time before manner before place when discussing trips in the past tense.

Consolidating vocabulary in different contexts is an important skill which needs regular practice. Some words have more than one meaning and it is important to use context to select the correct meaning German adverbs in a sentence follow the order time before manner before place, abbreviated to TMP. TMP, in German wann-wie-wo, applies in all tenses. In the perfect tense, the past partiple goes at the sentence end after the TMP elements.
