Introduction

In this lesson: I can describe how to build a simple test circuit, use it to check for faulty components, and find faults in a conducting circuit loop. The path current flows through a filament bulb can be traced, from one connection and through the filament to another. In a faulty filament bulb, the filament is broken and current cannot flow through it.

Show transcript
The path current flows through a filament bulb can be traced, from one connection and through the filament to another. In a faulty filament bulb, the filament is broken and current cannot flow through it. A circuit is not complete if there are any gaps in the circuit, or hidden in faulty wires or components. A wire or component can be tested by putting it into a simple circuit with a battery and bulb. A circuit with one faulty component will work if a wire is used to bypass the faulty component.

  1. 1. Which of these series circuits are correctly connected?

    • a diagram of a house with two lights attached to the house and a mailbox on the other side of the houseA
    • a drawing of two electrical devices connected to one another with wires attached to the back of the device and the front of the device connected to the back of the deviceB
    • Correct answer:a drawing of two batteries connected to a light bulb with a cord attached to the ground and two batteries attached to the groundC
  2. 2. Which of these electrical components is designed to spin when electricity flows through it?

    • a cell
    • a fuse
    • Correct answer:a motor
    • an ammeter
  3. 3. Which of the following used to represent electrical leads in a circuit diagram?

    • Correct answer:horizontal lines
    • Correct answer:vertical lines
    • Correct answer:straight lines
    • curved lines for corners
    • dotted lines
  4. 4. Which of the following electrical components has two metal contacts that open to stop electricity from flowing and close to allow it to pass through?

    • Correct answer:a switch
    • a lamp
    • a battery
    • a voltmeter
    • an ammeter
  5. 5. Sofia has drawn a circuit incorrectly. What mistake has she made?

    • the cells are too far apart
    • the switch should be closed
    • the ammeter should be beside the motor
    • Correct answer:the right side of the battery is not connected
  1. 1. Which of the following devices can be used to check if a component is working correctly?

    • Correct answer:multimeter
    • ammeter
    • voltmeter
    • battery
  2. 2. Which of the following is needed to allow electricity to flow around a circuit?

    • only one component
    • lots of cells
    • Correct answer:no gaps between the components
    • multiple loops
  3. 3. What is the name of the thin wire, found in some types of bulb, that glows when electricity passes through it?

    • an element
    • a component
    • a fuse
    • Correct answer:a filament
  4. 4. In this circuit, every component works as it should, until the bulb in one of the lamps blows. Which statement correctly predicts what will happen to the other components?

    • The motor will spin faster but the other lamp will get dimmer.
    • The motor will spin faster but the other lamp will get brighter.
    • Correct answer:The other lamp and motor will stop working.
    • The other lamp and motor will continue working as before.
  5. 5. Which of the following could cause an electrical lead to not work?

    • The lead is too long.
    • Correct answer:The metal wire inside the lead is broken or disconnected.
    • The lead is not the correct colour.
    • Correct answer:The lead is not correctly connected to a component.
  6. 6. Which of the following will cause a series circuit to stop working, if the filament inside a bulb breaks?

    • The bulb is rated too high.
    • Correct answer:The bulb is not fully screwed into the holder.
    • Correct answer:The filament has melted.
    • The filament gets very hot.
