Introduction

In this lesson: You can describe how plants are adapted to absorb light for photosynthesis. Plant leaves are made up of cells that contain structures called chloroplasts. Photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts.

Show transcript
Plant leaves are made up of cells that contain structures called chloroplasts. Photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts. Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light for photosynthesis. Plant leaves are thin to allow light to pass through to cells containing chloroplasts. Plant leaves have a large surface area to absorb light for photosynthesis.

  1. 1. What is the role of light in photosynthesis?

    • It is a product of photosynthesis.
    • It is a reactant in photosynthesis.
    • It is turned into food during photosynthesis.
    • Correct answer:It transfers energy from a light source for photosynthesis.
  2. 2. Which part of this leaf contains the most chlorophyll?

    • Correct answer:Part A
    • Part B
    • Part C
    • Part D
  3. 3. In which part of this leaf will the most photosynthesis take place?

    • Correct answer:Part A
    • Part B
    • Part C
    • Part D
  4. 4. Who correctly explains why leaves have a large surface area?

    • a black and white drawing of a woman's head with a turban on top of her head**Andeep:** “The surface area is large because leaves are thin.”
    • a black and white drawing of a man's head with a bunch of hair on top of it**Jacob:** “It allows them to take in more water.”
    • Correct answer:a black and white drawing of a boy's face with a bow on top of his hair and a smile on his face**Jun:** “It allows the leaf to absorb more light.”
    • a black and white drawing of a girl's head with a hairdow on it's head**Sofia:** “A large surface area means light can pass through the leaf."
