I can use 'je suis' and 'tu es' with adjectives to understand a variety of short sentences describing people's traits, e.g. 'anglais', and states, e.g. 'content'.

The sound-symbol correspondences [an/en] sound the same, as in the word 'enfant' ('child'). Silent final consonant -d is not pronounced, as in the adjective 'grand'. 'Tu es' means 'you are' and is part of the verb 'être' ('to be, being').
