Introduction

In this lesson: I can use a circuit diagram to build a series circuit and then draw a circuit diagram of a completed circuit. The names and symbols of the basic components of an electric circuit. A series circuit is an electric circuit with one complete loop from one end of a battery to the other end.

Show transcript
The names and symbols of the basic components of an electric circuit. A series circuit is an electric circuit with one complete loop from one end of a battery to the other end. A circuit is built systematically following a circuit diagram in one direction, starting from any point. A circuit diagram is drawn systematically, following the circuit in one direction, starting from any point. Wires in a circuit diagram are drawn using a ruler for clarity, with no gaps that would indicate a break in the circuit.

Quizzes

  1. 1. In a circuit with one cell and one lamp, what happens to the brightness of the lamp if a second cell is added (in series) into the circuit?

    • the lamp gets dimmer
    • Correct answer:the lamp gets brighter
    • the brightness of the lamp does not change
  2. 2. In a circuit with one cell and one lamp, what happens to the brightness of the first lamp if a second, identical lamp is added (in series with the first) into the circuit?

    • the brightness of the first lamp does not change
    • Correct answer:the first lamp gets dimmer
    • the first lamp gets brighter
  3. 3. Which component is represented by the symbol shown?

    • a battery
    • a buzzer
    • Correct answer:a lamp
    • a motor
  4. 4. Which component is represented by the symbol shown?

    • Correct answer:an electrical cell
    • a voltmeter
    • an ammeter
    • a resistor
  5. 5. Which of the symbols shown is used to represent a resistor?

    • a black and white photo of a circle with the letter a in the middle of the circle, and a black and white photo of the letter a in the middle of the circle
    • a black and white photo of a cross on a white background with a black outline of a cross in the middle of the image
    • a black and white photo of a wire with two circles on the end of the wire and a black and white photo of a wire with two circles on the end of the end of the wire
    • Correct answer:a black and white photo of a rectangular object with a rectangle on the bottom of the picture and a rectangle on the bottom of the picture
  6. 6. Which of the following changes would **increase** the brightness of a lamp in a circuit?

    • decreasing the current
    • increasing the number of lamps
    • Correct answer:increasing the number of cells
    • using longer wires
  1. 1. Which of these electrical components have + (plus) and – (minus) terminals?

    • Correct answer:batteries
    • lamps
    • Correct answer:cells
    • Correct answer:voltmeters
    • Correct answer:ammeters
  2. 2. Which of the following is required to make a series circuit work correctly?

    • there needs to be more than one loop
    • it needs to be built by starting at a cell or battery
    • Correct answer:there should only be one loop
    • Correct answer:the circuit should be complete
    • there needs to be an insulator in the circuit
  3. 3. Which of these is **not** a rule for drawing circuit diagrams?

    • Straight horizontal, or vertical, lines are used for wires.
    • Correct answer:Circuit symbols should be in colour.
    • Components are represented by circuit symbols.
    • No gaps between wires and components.
  4. 4. Which of these pieces of equipment should be used when drawing a circuit diagram?
